But there is an almost impossible selection to choose from. No wonder, with around 2,500 species. Cacti come in a wide range of shapes and sizes.

They can be spherical, cylindrical, pillar-shaped, with pointed or paddle-shaped leaves, and sometimes with pretty flowers in unusual colours. Thanks to their low maintenance requirements, cacti can survive even in the harshest conditions. The spines allow the plant to retain moisture from the air.

However, you should water the plant once a month, as it hardly ever rains indoors. The spines can be very sharp and hard, but also thin and soft. The spines and flowers develop from the areoles. They distinguish cacti from other succulents. Most cacti bloom during the day, but some also bloom at night. In the latter group, some are pollinated by bats. Origin Cacti originate from regions in North, Central and South America, where dry and less dry seasons alternate.

They are found in deserts, semi-deserts, steppes, humid jungles, on high mountain slopes and on trees in tropical rainforests. They are now widespread throughout the world and are a characteristic feature of the Mediterranean landscape, among others.
